Aspen Ski Week    Colorado / Jan. 25- Feb. 1, 2009

Aspen started as a Victorian silver-mining town in the late 1800’s and less than a hundred years later became a world-class ski resort which boasted what was then the longest chairlift in the world.  Now a renowned American playground of the rich and famous, there’s plenty of great skiing and fun entertainment for anonymous regular folks, too.

Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass are all included in our lift ticket and easily accessible via free shuttle service.  There’s something for everyone from wide and gentle beginner slopes at Buttermilk to demanding expert

terrain at Aspen Highlands, reputed to be the locals’ favorite.  We’ll get the chance to find out what our own OTHGI locals think as we join them and other members for one of our two guided ski days during the week.

We’ll stay at the Limelight Lodge in downtown Aspen, which has recently undergone a complete renovation, and is situated one block from the main pedestrian zone.  There are two hot tubs and an outdoor pool for your enjoyment at the end of the day, as well as an après ski reception every afternoon and a kitchenette in every room in case of midnight-snacking emergencies.  In the mornings, you’ll be able to pack in plenty of energy with the “expanded European breakfast” which offers hot and cold cereals, boiled eggs, meats, cheeses, yogurt and fresh pastries from a local bakery. Yummy!

The town of Aspen has plenty to offer during your time off the slopes or in the evenings.  There are restaurants, shops, spas, and galleries in the pedestrian zone.  Further afield, you’ll find a winter driving training center, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing trails, and snowmobiling.  Cultural options include the Aspen Art

Museum and the Wheeler Opera House, which offers concerts,

lectures, community events, films, opera, and more.

In addition to our usual welcome and farewell dinners together at some of Aspen’s tastiest restaurants and other venues, we’ll have a special lunch on the mountain so there’ll be plenty of time to enjoy each others’ company to the fullest.  It promises to be another superb Over the Hill Gang winter outing!
