2009-2010 Trips

OTHGI Blog

OTHGI Blog Question:
Does OTHGI have any family-oriented trips planned this year?
Jerry B., Sarasota, Florida

OTHGI responds:
There are a number
of Harry Potter related
trips this summer.

What other family type trips would you like to see offered?  Would a family ski trip over February vacation be something you would like to see?

SECURITY REQUIREMENTS:

Knit to Your Heart’s Content

Yes, though round and pointy, and potentially dangerous, knitting needles are OK to bring aboard. The Knitting Society must have effectively lobbied TSA. Go figure!

Round, small scissors are fine too. One must be able to cut the yarn, of course. But be prepared to do a virtual striptease before passing through security. One must remove shoes, hats, metal belt buckles, cell phones and loose change.  Make sure your gifts are unwrapped as they may be screened even though packed away in your luggage. TSA worries about such things.

If you value your carry-on liquids, pour them into 3 oz. bottles and place them in a quart size clear plastic bag
for security to examine.

Prescription medications, baby formula and food, and other medical items may be carried on board in bulk if declared first.  Once cleared through security, you may purchase all the food and drink you can carry on board.  Sit back and relax and enjoy the ride!

Getting Ready for Biking

Skis waxed and put away.  Boots cleaned and stored.
Clothes laundered.  Check.  Ski season is over.  It is time to get ready to ride.
Whether it will be on mountain trails, city streets, or paved paths safety checking your bike – and yourself - is vital to a successful season.  The Legend spoke with OTHGI member Jim Roberts who rides virtually year round in Tucson, Arizona, and Summit County, Colorado.  Jim is a bike maintenance guru and riding safety expert who’s riding form and spotless bike are much admired.
Examine your bike tires first, suggests Jim.  The back tire wears more rapidly than the front.  If the tire looks “flat” when fully inflated, it is time for a new set of
rubber.  Clean the chain, rings, sprockets, and derailleurs with Simple Green.  Compulsive Jim wipes these parts at least 4 times with a clean cloth.  Use Triflow on the wheel bearings and derailleurs to lubricate.  To clean the painted parts of your bike, Pledge Wipes remove the grime and leave a light coating for prolonged protection.  A wax lube on the chain finishes the bike.  However, do not forget to have a certified mechanic look at your brakes and cables before heading out.

The bike may be ready but are you?  Supplement your regimen with leg strengthening exercises using free weights or machines.   Work on riding a clean straight line pointing out obstacles and holes along the way while talking to your buddies without looking at them.   Less head turning, means fewer crashes, says Jim.  Have a great season.

OTHGI Ski Awards

The award season is upon us.  While not the Academy Awards, the recipient of the Most Improved Skier Award bestowed by Summit County OTHGI skiers is Jim Stookesberry of Denver.  The runners up, in alphabetical order, are Linda Bourke, Pat Larson, and John Melum.  A Wil and Lil Award to individuals who exemplify what OTHGI is all about: camaraderie, friendship, and helping fellow Gang members become part of the group.  Deserved winners this year are Bob Follett and Linda Ginsburg.

View From The Top

We have been hearing a great deal these days about stimulus packages and growing the economy.  We wish to put in our two cents.
The travel industry is beginning to rebound from the winter blahs.  Spring is in the air.  Gang members are getting itchy feet as the travel bug has begun to bite again.  In our office we are working hard to creatively craft trips - both old favorites and new adventures – and build a benefit package second to none.

Throughout July there are Harry Potter fan trips, ideal for grandparents and their grandchildren of all ages.  This summer brings biking and walking trips in Europe and a fabulous tour of Colorado’s wine country in September. Places are still available.  See the OTHGI catalogue for details.  Use your adventure bucks to save money.

Thinking ahead to next ski season, Vail Resorts has been wildly successful

with the Epic Pass which allows unlimited skiing at all five Vail resorts for $579.
We will continue to offer adventure bucks when purchasing the Epic Pass from our office. A win-win deal. Join in the fun. We hope to see you soon.
