Preparing for Ski Season
Chill is in the air; mountains are beginning to whiten; ski areas are ready to blow snow. Are you getting ready to take that first run down the mountain? Here are a few tips to make sure there are no surprises when making that initial descent in the white fluffy powder.
Winter Health Do's
- Stay fit and active year round
- Tailor your exercises to protect your knees and hamstrings by stretching and doing squats
- Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
- Test and tune your equipment
- Wear a helmet. This is an OTHGI requirement to ski with the Gang
- Layer your clothes to prepare for any weather
- Consume calories before hitting the slopes and snack on the mountain

Winter Health Don'ts
- Forget to stretch and warm-up
- Forget to use sunscreen in all outdoor conditions
- Wear cotton or cotton mix products
- Forget to use the buddy system and let friends and family know where you are
- Play in the backcountry without checking snow and weather conditions, using a compass or GPS, and skiing with a partner
Skiing is a way for seniors to push the envelope, challenge the edge of our physical ability, and feel the rush of the wind and excitement of descending a mountain tableau. Preparation is vital. Tune your body and mind as well as your equipment. Have fun!

View From The Top
There is a double metaphor for the past year: Doug Lofland tumbling down the mountain on his last ski run of the day and breaking his leg and Doug healing and getting back into the fray. Our nation's economy took a tumble too - don't we all know it! But it has bounced back since hitting bottom in mid-March 2009. The Fed has declared the "worst recession since the great depression to be over." Recovery is happening and OTHGI is part of it. We have picked ourselves up, dusted off the negativity of the past year and are back in the game, all cylinders going full blast. The catalogue is full of our favorite trips. Many are filling up fast like the good old days. Optimism is in the air and snow is beginning to cover the mountain peaks. Our ski programs at A-Basin, Breckenridge, and Keystone are set to hit the slopes with skis pointed downhill the first week in December. We are creatively marketing OTHGI to prospective members. This is going to be a banner year. Come join in all the fun while meeting old friends and making new ones. We hope to see you on the slopes this year. Doug promises not to fall!
OTHGI Frequent Travelers
OTHGI would like to thank and recognize many of our members who have traveled with us since the early 1990s. The camaraderie that has developed between individuals has resulted in lasting friendships and travel buddies whether during ski season, riding the roads in Europe, hiking trails around the world, or hitting the green on a golf trip. Those recognized are from all over the country and around the world. Thanks again, and we hope to see you again soon.30 Trips + OTHGI Trips
